Frequently Asked Questions
How often do you check for hail?+
During hail season (April–September), usually every 10 minutes, though some checks run hours apart. Radar hail estimates also take time to reach us, usually within about two hours of a storm, so an alert is not instant. Checks pause from October through March.
What data do the alerts use?+
MRMS MESH: the Maximum Estimated Size of Hail from NOAA's Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor system. A MESH size is estimated from radar, not measured on the ground. MESH is tuned so that roughly 75% of measured hail comes in at or below the radar estimate; read a size as a class (within about one tier), not as a measurement. MESH is explained at https://www.myhailscore.com/mesh. National Weather Service warnings and Storm Prediction Center reports do not trigger alerts.
How close does the hail need to be?+
Radar has to estimate hail of 1 inch or larger within about a mile of your saved address. A storm that passed 20 miles away does not count. You get at most one email per storm day. A recorded size is exposure, not a damage finding.
