Arvada, Colorado occupies the northwestern corner of the Denver metro, straddling Jefferson and Adams counties along the foothills. Its position between the mountains and the urban core gives it a hail profile that is different from cities further east — Arvada regularly catches both foothills-exit storms from the west and metro-corridor storms from the south.

With a mix of older housing stock (significant development from the 1950s through 1980s) and some of the best mountain views in the metro, Arvada is also home to some of the most hail-exposed roofs in Jefferson County.

Arvada's Hail Geography

Arvada's western edge pushes up against the foothills near Clear Creek Canyon and Ralston Creek. Storms that develop over the mountains and rapidly descend toward the plains frequently drop their first significant hail over the western neighborhoods of Arvada before the storm has fully transitioned to a plains-mode supercell.

The northern part of Arvada, near the Adams County line, also sits in the path of storms that develop along the Denver-Boulder corridor and track southeast. This creates a two-direction hail exposure that few other Denver suburbs share to the same degree.

Arvada Hail History

NOAA NEXRAD data shows Arvada has documented thousands of hail events within 15 miles since 2015. The western portions of the city tend to see larger hailstones from foothills-exit events, while the eastern and northern portions see more consistent frequency from metro storm tracks.

Jefferson County has ranked among Colorado's top five counties for insured hail losses in multiple recent years. Arvada, as the county's most populous city, represents a significant portion of that exposure.

Higher-Risk Arvada Areas

Ralston Valley and Arvada Ridge sit in the foothills transition zone on the western edge of Arvada. These neighborhoods are first in line for mountain-exit storms and regularly see the largest hailstones in the city.

Old Town Arvada is the historic core of the city with many homes dating to the early 20th century. Roofs here have the longest cumulative hail exposure in Jefferson County.

Lakecrest and Lake Arbor in northern Arvada border Westminster and Broomfield. The Denver-Boulder corridor storm track passes directly over this area.

Westwoods and Candelas on the northwestern edge of Arvada at higher elevation see consistent hail exposure from both storm track types.
